Reason For God

A Discussion Group on Belief & Skepticism

Does God exist? Isn’t the Bible a Myth? How Can You Say There Is Only One Way to God? What Gives You the Right to Tell Me How to Live My Life? Why Does God Allow Suffering? Why Is the Church Responsible for So Much Injustice? How Can God Be Full of Love and Wrath at the Same Time? These are questions that many of us, religious and non-religious, ask. This Six-Week discussion group exists to create a space where people can wrestle with these questions.

When Will We Meet?
On the following Thursday evenings from 7-8:30pm (June 15th, 22nd, 29th, July 6th, 13th, 20th).

Where Will We Meet?
We will meet in the Conference Room at Robbins Library in Arlington Center (700 Massachusetts Ave) located on the fourth floor.

What Will We Do?
Each time we meet, we will begin our time with a video addressing one of the questions mentioned above. These videos are not lectures, but roundtable discussions with people with various different beliefs. You can find more about these videos and the book Reason for God: Belief in the Age of Skepticism here. Once the video is completed, we will spend the remaining majority of our time discussing the topic together.

We'll also have refreshments provided for each of our meetings.

Here are the questions we will discuss each week
  • Isn’t the Bible a Myth? (June 15th)
  • How Can You Say There Is Only One Way to God? (June 22nd)
  • What Gives You the Right to Tell Me How to Live My Life? (June 29th)
  • Why Does God Allow Suffering? (July 6th)
  • Why Is the Church Responsible for So Much Injustice? (July 13th)
  • How Can God Be Full of Love and Wrath at the Same Time? (July 20th)

What If I'm Not Religious?
That's ok. This is meant to be a safe place for people who want to discuss such weighty questions. We believe that people can be passionately committed to beliefs while respecting others who may not agree.
